Victoria Bitter Women's National Rugby Championships 2008

report contributed by Audrey Koh

The 6th annual Victoria Bitters Women's National Rugby Championships kicked off with a bang with 5 local teams from Blacks, Singapore Recreation Club and Bucks Rugby way out west at Pioneer Secondary School on a balmy Saturday afternoon.

The first game between Blacks A and Bucks shelled out the first red-card in the Women's game since its inception 11 years ago, with Eunice Tay taking the honours in an adrenaline-charged match that saw the Blacks A team scoring 2 late tries after being 1 try down and down to 6 women. Blacks A won that encounter 12-5.

SRC A also had a slow start to their campaign, winning against Blacks B 17-5 in their first game, and drawing 10-10 with Bucks in their second, but coming back strong against their B team 33 - 0. Tries by Nicholina Chua, Koh Mei Giet, Angela Zheng and Sophie Gollifer, all novices to the 7s game, indicates an increase in depth of talent to the SRC pool of players. Bucks used their strength and physical prowess to easily overcome their next few opposition, smashing SRC B 27 - 0, and Blacks B 29 - 5, with the tries coming from Rebecca Gaughan and Gena Brantmark.

The second last match of the day saw Blacks B needing to salvage some pride against SRC B, with both teams losing all their games so far. Azurah Bte Mohd Khalid from Blacks B drew the first blood in the 3rd minute when she scored from a ruck 5 meters out. Marlina Kasbi from SRC responded 4 minutes later with a run down the left to put the ball in between the posts. A successful conversion by SRC saw them with a slim lead 7-5 at half-time. At the restart, Suryanti Suryono intercepted a loose ball, side-stepped 2 defenders and ran 50 meters to score SRC B's second try. Blacks B put the pressure on SRC B when they started to lose concentration after that try, with the forwards piling on the mauls down the right flank. Ailei Tandean scored Blacks B's second try 5 minutes into the 2nd half, but they failed to convert. With time running out, both sides got increasingly edgy, but SRC B managed to keep their composure, capitalised on a loose ball in the ruck, and Chrislin Lee scored the final try of the game, sealing victory over Blacks B 21 - 10.

By now the spectators were highly anticipating the last matchup of the day, between Blacks A and SRC A. The latter started out strong, pushing back the advance from the centre, but Blacks has the burst and speed of Derelyn Chua on the wings, which she used it to secure 2 tries. Even with SRC captain Boo Hui Min rallying her troops, it wasn't enough to stop Wang Shao Ing and Serena Yeoh from exploiting the holes in the defence to score 2 more tries.

Blacks A emerged Champions once again, with Bucks RFC taking the silver, but the winners were all the new players that tasted Club Rugby 7s for the first time, and came out with a better understanding of the game. With tours coming up end of March (7s) and May (15s) the future bodes well for Singapore Rugby.

On Red Sports: Rugby girls play with heart and honour to win silver

Korat, Thailand, December 12th, 2007 - The women’s 7s team’s bid for Sea Games glory started many months back. With trainings as often as three times a week and sometimes even during the weekend, the girls worked really hard in the lead-up to the tournament. And while the journey has since ended, the girls are still on a high from the once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The final day of the tournament was filled with tension and excitement. The Suranaree Army Stadium, packed with over 200 local supporters, was bustling with activity. After winning the semis (vs Laos 26-0) earlier in the day, our girls were all ready to face the speedy Thais in the finals.

The final score between Singapore and Thailand was 5-19, but by no means was that an accurate reflection of the team’s abilities. Thailand, making full use of their speed, broke through twice in the first half and at half-time, the score was 12-0. A lapse in concentration from the Singapore defence after half-time resulted in another try by the Thais.

Singapore’s Jeslyn Lim created a 2v1 situation with Derelyn Chua towards the end of the game and Chua ran down the touch line to score a consolation try. With two minutes left on the clock, Lim went down with a knee injury and the girls had to defend with only six men on the field.

Although the team has reached the end of the road for this Sea Games campaign, the friendships forged and the camaraderie built during the trip are precious gifts that all of them will treasure, and the girls have promised to keep on fighting for greater glory for the nation.

Lastly, the girls hope that more young kids will be exposed to rugby through schools and clubs and be inspired to take it up and bring Singapore rugby to greater heights!

Team against Lao PDR: Serena Yeoh (1 Try), Wang Shao-Ing, Kristy Teh, Aslinda Abdullah, Eunice Tay (1 Conversion), Jeslyn Lim (1 Try), Derelyn Chua (1 Try), Leung Waimun (1 Try) (S), Ang Weiyi (S), Angela Zheng (1 Try) (S)

From TODAY:

A CROWD of around 1,000 at the Suranaree Army Camp Stadium helped the Thai women's rugby team to victory in yesterday against a brave Singapore outfit in the sevens final here in Korat, Thailand at the 24th SEA Games.

Three unanswered tries — two coming in the first half — and two conversions gave the hosts a commanding 19-0 lead, but the Singaporeans did not give up. With 1:20sec left on the clock, Derelyn Chua broke free on the right flank from inside her own half and outran her marker to score a superb consolation try as the Thais ran out 19-5 winners.

"The girls are pretty disappointed," said team manager Malcolm David Retnam. "We felt good about our chances of winning it, and the girls had been working all year to try to win gold. And for some of them, this will be their last Games, so this was their last chance."

Just 20 minutes earlier, in the bronze medal match, the Singapore men came from behind to beat their Malaysian counterparts 12-5 in a tight encounter. The Malaysians got on the scoreboard first to take a 5-0 lead, but tries by Daniel Thiam and Bryan Ng set the Republic on their way. A two-point drop-kick by Thiam sealed the bronze medal for Singapore.

Watching from the stands was Singapore' chef-de-mission Low Teo Ping, who is also the president of the Singapore Rugby Union. "It was a good day, we came up against two difficult teams," said Low. "Our boys did well to win bronze. As for the women's final, Thailand's backline was just too strong." — David Ngiau in Korat

On Red Sports: Singapore ruggers beat Cambodia to qualify for semi-finals.

The Singapore women’s rugby 7s team took a step closer to the gold medal today when they ran over Cambodia 29-0 in the second and last day of the pool games.

Met with a fiery Cambodian side who were set on a game of pick-and-go, Singapore held their defensive lines with aplomb. Winger Angela Zheng, who made her debut start, opened the account with a try shortly after the kick-off. Minutes later, Ang Weiyi, who took up the hooking duties for the game, broke from within Singapore’s half to take the score to 14-0. Zheng then scored her second try of the tournament just before half time.

The second half was more of the same with Haseena Allapitchay and Chan Wan Cheng adding the points to bring the final score to 29-0.

Singapore will play Lao PDR in the semi-finals tomorrow and are most likely to meet tournament favourites Thailand in the final which will be played at 1640h.

In the men’s competition, the Singapore ruggers defeated Laos 40-0 and lost to Malaysia 14-21. The men qualified for the semi-final and will play Thailand.

Women’s team against Cambodia: Leung Waimun, Kristy Teh, Ang Weiyi (1 Try), Chan Wan Cheng (1 try), Haseena Allapitchay (1 try), Eunice Tay Gek Sie (2 conversions), Angela Zheng (2 tries), Serena Yeoh (S), Aslinda Abdullah (S), Jeslyn Lim (S).

and this just in: Thailand beat Singapore 19-5 in today's finals to win the gold.
